In the case of many, if not most, countries, their borders were established over centuries of development and conflict with neighbors, usually along geographical and linguistic lines. You can say “yeah, they’re all artificial,” but the borders of Italy and France are a lot less artificial than those of Iraq and Jordan which are literally where a British guy drew a line across a desert.
